Ruth Is Now on YouTube: All Four Chapters, Read Verse by Verse

For a long time we have wanted to put the whole Bible on YouTube as quiet, careful reading videos, a chapter at a time. That work has now begun, and the first book is done. All four chapters of Ruth are on our channel, with Esther coming next.

What you will see and hear

One chapter of the World English Bible fills each video. It is read aloud, and every verse appears on screen at the moment it is spoken. You will not hear music or a narrator's comments; the text stands on its own. A brief opening card shows a water lily and a few butterflies, then the scene settles into a slow animated background while the reading starts. For Ruth that background is lanterns rising over water at dusk. Chapter marks are set for each verse, so you can move straight to the passage you are looking for, and links take you to the chapter before or after.

Ruth may be short, but much is gathered into it. Early on comes this promise:

Ruth said, "Don't entreat me to leave you, and to return from following after you, for where you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God; — Ruth 1:16

And the book closes with a birth that reaches far past its own story:

The women her neighbors gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they named him Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David. — Ruth 4:17

How the videos are made

The narration comes from Google's Gemini text-to-speech. It was recorded verse by verse for Audio Bible, our free site where the whole World English Bible can be read and heard.

Every verse is then checked by listening. A computer voice can repeat a phrase or drop a few words and still sound quite natural, so speech recognition running on our own servers goes over each verse and compares it word for word with the Bible text. A verse is laid aside, re-recorded, and re-checked whenever a discrepancy appears. 84 verses containing a duplicated or absent phrase were discovered by applying this process to the entire English Bible, over 30,000 verses. Every single one underwent re-recording and verification. Six verses in Ruth were corrected this way before the videos now on the channel were made.

In 4K, filming happens from the Audio Bible reader, meaning the screen displays what the website displays: the verse being read, highlighted while spoken, over the animated background.

Before a video becomes public, it is reviewed on its own. A separate AI model, working independently, checks the verse text against the Bible, each chapter mark against the verse on screen, the opening, the ending, and the description. Publication occurs only for videos that pass.

Coming tomorrow

Esther is next, planned for tomorrow. It has ten chapters, the same voice you hear in Ruth, and a new background inspired by the palace court described in its first chapter. Continuing book by book through the entire Bible is what we will do from that point.
