World English Bible audio: where can you listen for free?

AudioBible’s John 1 reader, showing the chapter audio player, World English Bible text, and navigation on the released site.

You can listen to the World English Bible for free online at AudioBible, chapter by chapter. A Free account lets you download up to 4 chapter recordings per rolling 24 hours. The $9 USD yearly plan raises that to 40 downloads and adds ZIP files. Recordings use machine voices generated on demand, and downloads come as Opus files.

An on-demand audio Bible is one that creates a chapter recording the first time a listener asks for it, then keeps that recording for everyone who comes after. That is how we built AudioBible. Simply opening a chapter to read the text will not start audio generation. If someone has already requested the chapter, it plays right away; if not, you submit a request and wait for the file to finish.

What can you try in one short listening session?

Try John 1 first. You can listen to the entire chapter while reading the text on the page. When I measured our served chapter audio file on 10 September 2026, the John 1 recording ran for 318.66 seconds, about 5 minutes 19 seconds. The player on the John 1 reader page shows 5:18, because it shows whole seconds and drops the fraction. A quick listen gives you a clear sense of how the machine voice sounds before you consider a download plan.

How do you listen to the World English Bible online?

AudioBible keeps the chapter text and audio player together on one page so you can read along or look back at a verse.

  1. Search for a passage like "John 1" or pick a book and chapter.
  2. Hit play if the recording exists. If it has not been recorded yet, click the control to request it.
  3. The page shows generation progress sentence by sentence. Wait times vary depending on the chapter length and server workload.
  4. Move to the next chapter manually when you finish; playback does not advance automatically.

How can you start a seven-day Bible listening habit?

Here is a straightforward plan through John 1–7, one chapter a day. Copy the table into your notes or print it; you do not need to register to use it.

Day Chapter One question to carry into the day
1 John 1 What does this chapter say about the Word?
2 John 2 How do people respond to what Jesus does?
3 John 3 What does Jesus tell Nicodemus about new birth?
4 John 4 How does the conversation at the well change?
5 John 5 Why does the healing lead to disagreement?
6 John 6 What does Jesus mean by the bread of life?
7 John 7 Why do people reach different conclusions about Jesus?

Take your time with each chapter, write down a verse that stands out, and add your own question. If a chapter has no recording yet, request it and come back when it is ready. If you have an account, you can save available chapters before you go offline, within your download allowance.

What is free, and what does $9 a year include?

Listening in your browser is completely free. You only need an account if you want to download audio files to your device.

Feature Free listening Free account $9 USD yearly plan
Listen online and read along Yes Yes Yes
Save chapter recordings using download controls Sign in first Up to 4 per rolling 24 hours Up to 40 per rolling 24 hours

Available recordings Listen online Choose individual available chapters Full available recordings library, within the download allowance
Audio file format Browser playback Opus Opus, including files inside ZIPs

As listed on AudioBible's published plans on 10 September 2026, the yearly plan costs $9 USD. It raises your limit from 4 downloads to 40 downloads per rolling 24 hours and adds batch ZIP files. Those are download limits, not a count of chapters already recorded, and a ZIP containing ten chapters counts as ten chapter downloads against your allowance, not one.

There is also a shared network ceiling of 40 per IP address across any rolling 24 hours. People sharing an internet connection at home, church, or work share that ceiling, even with separate accounts.

A rolling 24 hours does not reset at midnight. Each download drops off the count once 24 hours pass from when you made it.

Is the whole Bible already recorded?

No. As of 12 September 2026, AudioBible's own coverage report shows 48 of the 1,190 chapters in its index generated, 4%, about 2 hours 47 minutes of audio in total. The library grows chapter by chapter as listeners request them. You can always read the text, but the audio might not exist yet.

Subscribing to the paid plan gives you access to the full available recordings library, but it does not promise a complete prerecorded Bible. Batch ZIPs only bundle files that have already been generated.

If you need a complete recording right now, eBible.org hosts Winfred W. Henson's World English Bible audio, which includes book links and a whole-Bible archive. That is a separate recording and a separate service; AudioBible's own voice is generated by machine.

Which translation and voice does AudioBible use?

AudioBible uses the World English Bible in English, provided by the World English Bible project as public domain. We do not offer other translations.

The audio uses machine voices: one synthetic narrator for the main text and a second voice for quoted speech. It is not a human studio reading. It may say a name differently from the way you would, or shape a sentence in a way you would not, so listen to a chapter first and decide whether it works for you.

Frequently asked questions about World English Bible audio

Can I listen without paying or creating an account?

Yes. Online listening is free. You only need to sign in if you want to use the chapter-download controls.

Where can I get a complete World English Bible audio download?

eBible.org provides a whole-Bible ZIP of Winfred W. Henson's recording. AudioBible is generated on demand as listeners request chapters, so our paid plan only covers recordings that currently exist.

Are the downloads MP3 files?

No. AudioBible downloads are Opus files, even inside a ZIP archive. Check that your offline player supports Opus. If you need MP3 format, eBible.org maintains a World English Bible MP3 page recorded by Michael Paul Johnson and other volunteers.

Can I download several chapters with a Free account?

Yes, up to 4 downloads per rolling 24 hours, saving each chapter individually. The yearly plan raises the allowance to 40 downloads and adds ZIP archives, subject to the shared IP ceiling.

Does a batch download generate missing audio?

No. A batch only packages chapters that have already been generated. You must request missing audio on its chapter page first, then download it once it finishes.

Does listening move to the next chapter automatically?

No. AudioBible plays one chapter at a time so you can follow the text. You navigate to the next chapter manually when you are ready.

You can listen to John 1 for free to judge the voice yourself, then work through the seven-day plan above.
